- Has experienced rapid motorization and subsequent increase in road traffic fatalities since 1992
- There is a predicted 48% increase in traffic fatalities from 1990 to 2020
- Highest country-specific traffic fatality rates include 41.7 per 100 000 population in El Salvador, 41.0 per 100 000 population in the Domini¬can Republic, and 25.6 per 100 000 population in Brazil
- Road traffic accidents cost US$18.9 billion per year, and account for 1.5% of GDP on average
- Pedestrians are the road user group at greatest risk of injury
