LOCAL musician Robert Kyaggulanyi alias Bobie Wine has joined local and
international organisations to promote the use of helmets among
motorcyclists commonly known as boda boda.
Bobie Wine yesterday said: “I want to change the stereo-type that
helmets have lice and are smelly. I want the ghetto youth and all
Ugandans to know that it is cool to wear a helmet because it saves
lives.”
“I am appealing to the public, the ghetto youth and my guys the
boda boda riders, to embrace helmet use without Police enforcement and
let us all behave responsibly.”
He said he would use songs to disseminate information on helmet use.
Addressing the press at the launch of the Uganda Helmet Vaccine
Initiative (UHVI) at the Fairway Hotel in Kampala yesterday, Bobie Wine
stated: “Helmet use reduce fatality by 42% and severe injury by 69%.”
UHVI is an affiliate of the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative (GHVI).
According to Barbra Mwanje, the GHVI Programme manager, the
initiative is aimed at reducing motorcycle injuries and deaths by
increasing helmet use.
She added that GHVI is supported by the Asia Injury Prevention
Foundation, the Federation International Automobile and the World Bank
Global Road Safety Facility.
The initiative has been launched by the Automobile Association of Uganda in conjunction with Arrive Alive Uganda.
